Fast Fashion – A Vicious Cycle?

It is well known that fast fashion is bad for the environment. In Germany, the average person buys sixty new clothes a year. But overcrowded wardrobes are increasingly taking a toll on consumers' mental wellbeing. When clothes are finally sorted out and donated, this does not automatically mean that they will be recycled or reused. In fact, in Germany, only a quarter of collected used clothing is recycled. Of this, only a small proportion goes through true fibre-to-fibre recycling, where new clothes can be made. The majority is shredded and turned into filling material or cleaning rags - and sooner or later ends up in the bin anyway.

The Solution: DIY and Upcycling

So what can be done? ABURY has decided to take recycling into its own hands - in fact, we are upcycling! DIY and upcycling are trends that have grown with the increasing awareness of sustainability and minimalist consumption. Turning old into new, breathing new life into a favourite item and enhancing it through creative craftsmanship. Instead of throwing away old clothes or accessories or buying new ones, they can be transformed into new, unique treasures - good for the environment and your personal well-being.

How Does Upcycling Work?

Upcycling means giving new life to old items - and when it comes to vintage bags, the creative possibilities are endless. Instead of throwing old bags away, you can use simple materials such as fabric paint, embroidery, ribbons or patches to give them a personal touch. Upcycling ideas can be found on DIY blogs, social media or through special creative workshops that offer step-by-step instructions and inspiration.vintage berber bag with accessories

ABURY Vintage Bags

ABURY boasts an impressive collection of vintage bags, passionately collected by ABURY founder Andrea Bury in Moroccan markets. These bags are up to 50 years old, handmade from goat leather and embroidered with cactus silk. They have accompanied Berber men on their journey through the desert and carry the stories and charm of ancient Berber fairy tales.

Although some of the bags show signs of wear, such as faded embroidery or loose straps, they are simply too beautiful not to be worn! This is how the idea of upcycling them was born. This concept allows the desire for a unique accessory to be combined with the joy of crafting. During the workshops, participants had the opportunity to create their very own upcycled vintage bag - the perfect accessory for festivals and warm summer nights!

In the big ABURY upcycling workshop, each participant could choose a vintage bag and get creative according to their personal taste. Thanks to our partners Union Knopf, Pink Stories, Dortex, Rico Design, UHU Kreativ and My Tinkerbox, a wide range of materials and tools were available to bring their ideas to life.patches, beads, paints for diy vintage berber bag
