In the accessories collection, they stand out with their playful splashes of colour, resembling tiny raindrops strung together in a circle. Known as tagua bracelets, these special pieces have a fascinating origin story: before they grace fashionistas around the world, the tiny droplets of tagua nut grow high in the palm trees of the Ecuadorian rainforest.© Suzana Holtgrave for ABURY

From Palm to Bracelet – The Journey of the Tagua Nut

How does the fruit of the tagua palm become an intricate bracelet? The process of creating tagua nut jewellery is a blend of craftsmanship, hard work and tradition. It all begins with the harvesting of the tagua nuts, often in remote mountainous regions of Ecuador. The palm fruit is opened with a machete, revealing the heart of our bracelets: the tagua nut.

After harvesting, the palm nuts are polished and dyed with organic vegetable dyes to achieve the vibrant, vivid colours that make our bracelets so unique. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind handmade creation and a masterpiece of Ecuadorian craftsmanship.© Photos via Organic Tagua Jewelry

Doing Good for People, Animals, and the Environment

Tagua bracelets are not only stylish, but also environmentally and socially sustainable. The palms from which the tagua nuts are harvested regenerate every year, making the entire process 100% sustainable. Tagua nut waste is reused as animal feed in the villages where the bracelets are made. The dyes used in the bracelets are all vegetable based and chemical free, protecting the environment.

But it's not just nature that benefits from tagua nut jewellery: the production of these bracelets provides a fair and steady income for artisans in Ecuador. For many families in the villages, this means a more stable future, better educational opportunities for their children and the ability to preserve their cultural heritage. In an exclusive interview with Soraya Cedeno, founder of Organic Tagua Jewellery, we learned why Soraya has made it her life's mission to support artisans in her home country through direct, fair and sustainable work.

Tagua: A Perfect Harmony of Tradition and Modernity

Tagua bracelets symbolise the beauty of Ecuador, the marriage of tradition and modernity, and the power of sustainable change. Each nut, each bracelet tells a story - from the depths of the rainforest to the hands of the artisan who made it.

When you buy a tagua bracelet, you support traditional craftsmanship and the preservation of the rainforest and its wildlife. Tagua nut jewellery even helps protect endangered species such as elephants by providing a sustainable alternative to ivory. Tagua nut jewellery is a movement for a better future.

They represent the dedication of a community, the beauty of the rainforest and the hope for a better future. Passing on generations of knowledge and skills, the artisans are custodians of a unique heritage.
