Handmade in Ethiopia

Artisans weaving products handmade in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a melting pot of many different cultural influences: From African to Middle Eastern to Italian and South-East Asian, this country is one-of-a-kind in terms of culture and mind-set. Geographically speaking, Ethiopia is quite special as well: Mountains and plateaus, the Great Rift Valley, steppes and semi-desert areas are all to be found in Ethiopia’s landscape.

Many Ethiopians work in agriculture or in handicraft. Since cotton is one of the major crops growing in Ethiopia, weaving plays an important role and is a big part of the country’s cultural heritage. Ethiopian artisans have been spinning cotton and weaving it into unique pieces for centuries. Both men and women collaborate to create these pieces, and they are entirely made by hand! After the cotton is harvested, women traditionally spin it into yard, using techniques passed on from mother to daughter, and dye the thread with organic dyes. It is then handwoven on a loom by men, using techniques passed on by their fathers before them. Today, the traditional handicraft is combined with modern designs to create remarkable sustainable fashion products.

We work together with the crafts community Sabahar in Ethiopia who does exactly that: In fair trade production, the artisans manufacture cotton scarves and cotton towels. The winner of the third ABURY Design Experience, Ruth Hepburn, spent four weeks with Sabahar to develop a collection of cotton bags, belts, bandanas and scarves in summery colours. The sustainable fashion products are all handmade and carry a real social impact. By purchasing one of the fair trade products, you help the weaving community in Ethiopia to gain a fair salary and sustain themselves through their handicraft. Our mission is to create social impact and preserve cultural heritage such as traditional handicraft. „Handmade in Ethiopia“ here at ABURY is more than just a label, it means fair trade sustainable fashion products which create a real social impact.
